I'll choose six of your icons and kind of o.O at them.
You'll explain what they mean, or why they exist, or why you use them.
If you want to, post your answers and this explanation in your journal so others might play along.

[Current Music |Split Enz - I See Red]

Wound up spending all day with [info]supersniffles and [info]firestrike; we had a BayCon staff meeting in the morning (and lasting much too long for someone who was awakened by chainsaws and leaf blowers), and were going to the bar in the evening, so it just made more sense to adjourn to the House of Pink in the interim. Someone played a Sleep card on Firestrike and me (snuggly person + flannel sheets = *snore*), so we didn't get out of the house quite as early as we intended, and as such I only got to sing twice. But I made it count. )
I must say, though, having a bartender who loves you is a mixed blessing; I only had one drink while I was there, but it was strong enough that I couldn't finish it, and BOY am I aware of my skull this morning. ;-)

[info]gridlore just informed me that nothing appeared to be happening on NYE that suited his mood, and I was free to make my own plans. YAY!

So, I'll be ringing in the new at KoC with [info]kor27 (and $DEITY knows who else, as there's a party at the Hamptons that evening, and I suspect most of the regulars will be there). The show usually starts by 9, sooner if there are enough singers in the bar. Hope to see you there!

[Current Mood |nervous]

So I went to the bar with every intention of closing the place down; a sinus headache (exacerbated by a poorly-thought-out spate of headbanging during [info]jeffercine's rendition of "Sad But True" and sadly not helped by a lovely scalp massage from [info]kor27) put the kibosh on that, and I left around midnight. However, it was still slow enough at the beginning of the evening that I got a considerable amount of singing in.

See? )

I'm headed out the door shortly (yes, it's after 5; [info]gridlore had the day off, so I got to sleep in, too, but I misjudged the traffic and got here late) to SiliCon; I have no idea if they've got a net.lounge or not, so I'm likely to be incommunicado for the weekend. See ya!

[Current Music |Train - Calling All Angels]

As promised (or perhaps threatened) before I left for That Thing In The Desert™, I spent last night at the bar. [info]kor27 generously picked me up in the Short Bus, as the car is still full of playa-coated goodness, and the idea of negotiating the parking lot when I can't see out of the back window wasn't appealing to me.

Grabbed my book light on a whim as I was getting ready to leave, and it turned out to be a wise decision. There's a lighting fixture behind the table where I generally sit that normally has black-light bulbs in it, which react to the white pages in my composition book well enough for me to write by; that fixture is currently empty.

...and the bracket for the actual head of the book light broke while I was there. Oh, well, I saw a nifty-looking gooseneck model the last time I was at Bounders, anyway....

[Current Mood |just. DONE.]

...but the stereo is fixed. Again. It turned out to be a loose fuse (one I honestly cannot recall if [info]gridlore's boss Tim looked at yesterday or not - he used to do installations when he was younger, so he had a gander when I picked Doug up yesterday). I'll let Doug tell the story this time (quoted from this post):
Ladles and other cooking implements, my wife is not confrontational. She is more likely to back down, negotiate, and accept things than I am.

Today, I was worried that I might be forced to restrain her. She spotted the owner as we walked in, and ripped him a new asshole over the constant problems we have encountered since winning this system. She was loud, forceful, and the owner kept glancing at the other customers in the shop in fear.

I have never been so proud.

They fixed the problems, and we're still working on getting a refund (full or partial) on the installation. When I mentioned this (as Kiri was bringing the car around) the owner protested that he had given us multiple discounts. We were quoted $295 for installation. We paid a bit over $400.

This guy is slimy.

Yes, boys and girls, I had an audience. I was rather maliciously proud of this fact. (I also had the cellphone number for my contact at the radio station, so I sent him a text to let him know Samir was actually on-site today; I hated to suggest he go over there on a weekend, but considering how impossible it has been to buttonhole the owner, I thought it might be his only chance.)

36-Hour Notice (more or less) [Aug. 8th, 2007|10:15 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Music |Enya - Orinoco Flow (on 10@10)]

Since folks have been grumping about the number of times I've gone to the bar without letting anyone know before hand, I figured I'd do something about that (though to be honest, a lot of those times I didn't know I was going until I got there).

Friday my office is closed; we're moving to Mountain View, and the trucks are coming in way too friggin' early to get all the stuff off our floor of the building before the Jazz Festival starts closing lanes. Thursday, therefore, I will be closing down the joint with [info]kor27 and company. (I may not be drinking much; I have $1.45 in the bank until my last $100 transfers over from The Account That Doesn't Exist, and I have to put gas in the car once it does. At present, I have the $3 I need to get in the door, and that's it.) [info]gridlore has been warned that it is entirely likely I will get home from post-show breakfast just in time to take him to work the next morning.

I can't give you a ballpark on when I'll be there, unfortunately - [info]murphymom informed me Monday night that Thursday is #1 Son's birthday dinner at Benihana (the actual b'day was yesterday), and I'm not passing up a chance to finally eat there. (This also means I won't be requiring the services of The Short Bus to get me to the bar and back again. Or at least, that I won't be able to avail myself of said services.)

Hope to see some of you there!

[Current Mood |flattered beyond all reason]

I stopped by the bar long enough to sing for [info]supersniffles for her birthday. Two numbers, both at her request: "Walking In Memphis" by Marc Cohn and "White Rabbit." I'm not recapping them individually tonight because there was a far more important detail to the evening:

[info]firestrike had never heard me sing before.

I came back over to our table after my first number, and he very carefully took my glass out of my hand, set it down, then took my face in his hands and kissed me within an inch of both our lives. His next several minutes of conversation can be summed up as "DAMN. I mean...wow." And in turn, his reaction reduced me to a succession of "um...thank you"s, punctuated by fervent gratitude that the light in the bar is as poor as it is.

It was a good night.

More updates - most of them good [May. 25th, 2007|06:37 pm]

[Current Mood | exanimate]

I've spoken with [info]gridlore several times throughout the day, and he's made several fantastic advances thus far. As of 1040 this morning, he stood up unassisted for the first time in days. As of 1230, he had successfully negotiated a flight of 15 stairs both up and down. He's still feeling weak, but he's miles beyond where he was when I took him in yesterday.

In labwork-related news, they've discovered a thyroid issue (he didn't tell me + or - and may not have known the difference anyway), and started medicating him for that; the folks I've talked to here with wonky thyroids heard that and all said "Yeah, that explains a lot." They're still doing the 24-hour test, but the improvements we've seen thus far make it look at least possible (if not quite likely yet) that Doug will still make at least part of the con.

I was unable to locate an oversized get-well card - so damnit, I made one. I opted for a box of 30 gel pens in lieu of a collection of 10 micro-point Sharpies, and am regretting the decision; anyone reading this who is either staying off-site or won't be at con until tomorrow and can bring me multicolored Sharpies will be saluted as a Hero of the Revolution (or at least get one of our limited-edition badge ribbons).

And how am I, you ask? )

[Current Mood |reply hazy, ask again later]

Five minutes after I hit post Doug called me to take him to the hospital. (I made a phone post while I was in the car coming to get him, but it doesn't appear to have made it to the server.)

I just got back to the office for the afternoon; he hasn't been admitted yet, but almost certainly will be. The MD we spoke with (who was fabulous - almost everyone we've dealt with today has been great) explained what a normal potassium level is (5-6 - it's an exponential measurement, like earthquakes) vs. what his actually was (2.2 in yesterday's labs, today's weren't back before I left) and the dangers of putting too much in the system too soon ("I'd just squirt ya and send you on your way, but too much potassium is how Kevorkian's machine works"). They had finished the first infusion (both K and magnesium) as I was leaving, and were going to be doing follow-up labs to see how well he was absorbing it. There is a possibility (pending his response to the infusions, discovery of a root cause, etc.) that he could be released as early as tomorrow

I have a Crappy Cellphone Picture™ of him in his hospital bed that I will be emailing the newsletter staff. ;-) (He's sticking his tongue out at me, it's great.) I'll also be stopping on my way up to the hotel tonight (Yes, I'm still coming up - if only so I can get all the crap for the party offloaded into [info]aurictech and [info]ataniell93's room) to pick up one of those absurdly oversized get-well cards and parading it around Meet The Guests tomorrow if he isn't on-site by then. (As well as a bottle of Nair - they did an excellent job of attaching the lead pads for the monitor and the EKG, but there's still some hair stuck under them, and it'll be easier to just kill all of it before pulling the pads off.)

Apart from a few moments in the car where I desperately wanted [info]dafydd with me (not simply as someone to hang onto, but as someone who Speaks Doctor), I'm actually doing remarkably well. If anything, Doug going into the hospital makes things easier for me, because I'm no longer on eleventerhooks (these go to eleven) waiting for my phone to ring with the call I got at 0930 this morning.

BTW, thanks to all of you who made food suggestions for increasing his K levels, but remember that this is Doug Who Won't Eat Anything we're talking about. (Alas, literally - one of the other things that has been wrong these last two weeks is that he's not producing any saliva, so none of the few things he will eat taste right. They gave him crackers and cheese this morning, and he wasn't even able to finish one cracker...on top of the saliva issue and still having no matching molars, he was actually so weak he was having trouble chewing.)

Anyway. I've finished inhaling the burrito I picked up on my way back here, and really should do some actual work in the three hours I've got left. I'll see some of you later this evening; [info]sylvan is my Point of Contact on-site until I get there. [info]kevin_standlee, Doug would like me to sit in for him on Match Game, even if he is on-site; if you have an alternate, I'm okay with that, but I think it'd be a blast to do. (And I can pimp [info]tas_baycon and the Minions of Doug while I'm up there. *grin*)
