Weak Minds Strong Backs.
Showing their usual sense of timing and consideration, the landlords showed up yesterday to inform all the tenants that anything other than cars that was still in the garage after 4/30/08 would be thrown out, preparatory to rebuilding and assigning the alleged storage units that have been completely useless in the five years we've lived here. (They also gave us a separate letter, saying that we still weren't up to cleanliness standards - though how they would know that when they didn't show up three months ago when they said they would, and never attempted to reschedule, is beyond me, but I digress.)
All of my crap for going to Burning Man is in the garage, along with an extra futon frame that needs to be set up in my room (and a couple of other things that we'll actually be getting rid of). And while my wrist has dramatically improved in the last six weeks, I simply do NOT have the strength to haul this crap upstairs, nor do I have any desire to foist all the work off on gridlore.
I know a sizable percentage of the locals on my f'list are going to CostumeCon this weekend - hell, I'm going myself on Saturday. But if any of y'all are available to come down to Offhand Manor on Sunday around noon or so, to help us tote barges and lift bales, I would be ENORMOUSLY grateful. I'll even feed y'all.
Email Doug or me and we'll get you the address if you don't already have it. |

Remember that question in certain versions of the Purity Test about "does your cursing have some style to it"?
THIS is style.
(Safe for work, but you'll find yourself wanting desperately to apologize to the OP, for all that you may never have met zir.) |

| Match It For Pratchett |
[Mar. 16th, 2008|07:29 pm] |
The more fannish among my readers will remember the announcement last December that Terry Pratchett had been diagnosted with early-onset Alzheimer's. He followed that earlier this week with a $1M donation to the Alzheimer's Research Trust in the UK. It didn't take too long for the idea of matching the donation to hit the blogosphere.
The announcement that Pterry had made his contribution hit my f'list on the first anniversary of Aunt Mary's passing. As those of you who were reading me then may recall, she was three weeks shy of her 99th birthday, and was blessed with a fully-functional body and brain until the very end. Her sister, my great-grandmother, was not so lucky...she spent her last five years on this earth descending into senile dementia, trapped inside her own mind for those final 18 months.
After Nana's passing, her daughter (my Grammy) stated on more than one occasion that she didn't want to "end up like her;" sadly, this became a self-fulfilling prophecy, and she has been in a residential facility specializing in Alzheimer's and dementia care for several years now. So it's no real surprise that I read the announcement, heard about the challenge, and found that my wallet felt a little heavy....
The drive to match Pterry's contribution now has its own home online - http://www.matchitforpratchett.org/ - and an RSS feed, available here as pratchettmatch. The site links to a shop where you can buy shirts with the logo featured in my icon, with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer's Research Trust; the site maintainer is collecting links for Alzheimer's charities around the world, if you want your money to stay closer to home. I made my own contribution to the Alzheimer's Association here in the US; if you plan on doing the same, I humbly suggest you use the Tribute link, and note that your contribution is in honor of Match It For Pratchett. It's not perfect (there's only room to note one honor/memorial, so you can't mention that AND a family member or friend), but it would be nice to see how many contributions the other organizations outside the UK receive. |

Comment on this post. I'll choose six of your icons and kind of o.O at them. You'll explain what they mean, or why they exist, or why you use them. If you want to, post your answers and this explanation in your journal so others might play along. ( Shay picked these: ) |

| Last night's musical selections |
[Jan. 14th, 2008|09:05 am] |
Wound up spending all day with supersniffles and firestrike; we had a BayCon staff meeting in the morning (and lasting much too long for someone who was awakened by chainsaws and leaf blowers), and were going to the bar in the evening, so it just made more sense to adjourn to the House of Pink in the interim. Someone played a Sleep card on Firestrike and me (snuggly person + flannel sheets = *snore*), so we didn't get out of the house quite as early as we intended, and as such I only got to sing twice. ( But I made it count. ) I must say, though, having a bartender who loves you is a mixed blessing; I only had one drink while I was there, but it was strong enough that I couldn't finish it, and BOY am I aware of my skull this morning. ;-) |
