| Where do I download my letters of marque & reprisal? |
[Jul. 24th, 2008|04:20 am] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | amused | ] | Internet service providers (ISPs) and the music industry have reached an agreement to clamp down on illegal downloads... Britain's six largest ISPs - BT, Virgin Media, Orange, Tiscali, BSkyB and Carphone Warehouse - signed a memorandum of understanding with the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the body which represents record companies in the UK. ISPs have agreed to commit themselves to developing legal file-sharing services and to ensure their customers know that it is illegal to share copyright-protected music. It is thought likely that many parents will learn for the first time from the letters that their children are using their bedroom PCs and laptops for illegal piracy.
I'm not trying to relight the firestorm discussion about downloads, fair use, intellectual property, and the commercial viability of various publishing models. Like most of the members of SFWA, I'm are sick of it.* I'm just glad that the author(s) of this article pointed out that the downloaders are committing a crime by committing acts of illegal piracy, as their terminology serves to draw a clear distinction between the illegal and legal varieties of the trade. Unless otherwise prohibited, legal piracy is still a valid form of expression employment action.**
And on that note (Thank you, Fozzie. Nice segue, Fozzie): while the US Supreme Court recently ruled on the scope of the Second Amendment, I'm not aware that they've yet been asked to weigh in on the legality of Article 1, Section 8, paragraph 11 of the US Constitution. Of course, they might have, if Ron Paul's Marque and Reprisal Act of 2001 had passed. I'm really surprised that he didn't make this a major speaking point during his presidential campaign. I know a number of people who might have gone to his rallies if he'd gotten Abney Park*** as an opening act...
*If you missed the brew-up regarding SFWA, the DMCA, and digital downloading, you might consider getting your cave hooked up to the internet. If you feel an obsessive need to understand this reference, google the two acronyms in the last sentence and get your dose of bitter venom for the week.#
**Of course, since the UK gave up the right to issue letters of marque when they signed the Paris Declaration in 1856, the poor teens in their British bedrooms are still SOL.
***Hey, I'm not gonna do all of your work for you. Look this one up yourself.
#I am not and have never been a member of SFWA. I don't make the stuff, I'm just a habitual user. While I have an opinion on the matter, I'm not going to go into it here. |

In "Movies people really really really REALLY need to not be remaking" news, >MTV Remaking The Rocky Horror Picture Show
I have no words other than *SIGH* I mean, "you don't touch a cult classic" aside... why? Without the callbacks, floorshow and the toilet paper, Rocky Horror ain't that great a movie. Specially in the last 1/2 hour. |

Oh Great Knitting Mavens, how does one check gauge on 2 X 2 ribbing? Stretch the fabric? Don't stretch the fabric? If stretching the fabric, how much?
Planning to embark on my first top-down raglan sweater and I would rather not have an 80's off the shoulder look when I'm done.... |

I am hankering for a quiche, and I have everything to make it except for the cheese and the cream/milk. Can I still make a good quiche? Any recipes?

WHAT?! Yeah you don't need to use cream, or even standard milk you can mix it up with other dairy products such as creme fraiche, coconut milk etc. (though it is then not 'proper' quiche) but what kind of... *brain go splode* |

| | calm | ] | A snippet from today's Elder Meditation on White Buffalo: Life is like a path...and we all have to walk the path... As we walk...we'll find experiences like little scraps of paper in front of us along the way. We must pick up those pieces of scrap paper and put them in our pocket... Then, one day, we will have enough scraps of papers to put together and see what they say... Read the information and take it to heart."
This is often how I feel but I've never been able to give the right words to it. Beautiful. |

| Doctor Who - Doctor Who? - Dr Who? - Dr. Who? |
[Jul. 24th, 2008|11:54 am] |
I can't believe I found a massive thread on Outpost Gallifrey (or whatever they call it now) this morning discussing whether the show should be renamed to "Dr Who".
Obviously this would never happen, but I thought we could have our own silly discussion :) |

This is a re-post, as I kind of had bad timing the first time round. I posted the fic just before the community was inundated with review posts dealing with either the second last episode or the season finale. But considering what happens in the season finale I though this fic was appropriate. So I hope you enjoy!
Title: The Room Rating: PG Characters: The Doctor [TARDIS sort of] Spoilers: None Disclaimer: I don't own the characters from Doctor Who

At some point it becomes necessary for someone to fill in the new player on what's happened in the game already, and what the characters' mission
is actually supposed to be - as opposed to all the random running around and fighting and stuff that has happened since the player joined the game.
At times like this, it pays to ask the most sensible player in the group what the story is.
