Please post your full name, date of birth, full address, and telephone number (plus cell phone number, if you have one) to your journal, as the first chronological entry (backdated) in your journal, with Private security, and leave a note in your userinfo indicating that you've done so. The life you save may be your own. In the event of an emergency, LiveJournal administrators can view this information -- and please believe that it is only used in the event of an absolute emergency. But you'd be surprised how many of those there are on a service with four million users. And in an emergency situation, every second counts.
Yes, the Abuse team occasionally hears of users who plan to commit suicide, but there are other situations where having this information could possibly be of use to the police. There have been, for instance, phone posts that were interrupted by physical violence before, and other such situations. The Abuse team often gets reports of these things, and oftentimes, there is nothing we can do to help, because we can't find you.
Please take a moment of your time and make this post. Your privacy will never be violated except in absolute need, and though we hope it will never be necessary, it could prove to be very necessary indeed.
Done and done, with next-of-kin information as well. (Being a warped sort of individual, I backdated it to the date and time of my birth.) Here's hoping you never need it. |

Done. Always a good idea.
What's to keep the information from being abused? I live upstairs from my brother, down the street from my parents and a little further down the street from my brother and his family, so I'm not terribly concerned about no one being able to find me in an emergency.
I'm not sure why you chose to respond to a three-year-old post, or how you encountered said post in the first place. That said, nobody has ever suggested this be mandatory. If you're comfortable with the number of people who have your information without posting it in your journal, that's your prerogative. Personally, I've been directly involved in enough situations where a group of online friends were concerned about someone in another city/state/country and had no way of confirming that nothing was wrong that I think it's a worthwhile endeavor.
My post gets updated several times a year, and includes things like current medications, the fact that I'm registered as an organ donor in my home state, and my expected departure and return dates when I go to Burning Man every year. My ex-partner includes contact information for the people who hold his Durable Power of Attorney. Because there's no guarantee that if Something Bad Happens, it will happen when you're at home or with family.
Ahh, I didn't realize I was responding to a three year old post. I was linked to it by a friend very much more recently. I suppose it wouldn't really hurt to put what information could be easily found by other means anyway, just to consolidate it in what spot for easy access. I wouldn't include my social security number or anything like that, just to be safe, but the rest, maybe so. I didn't think about the Something Bad happening while I'm away, because at home is practically the only place I ever use LJ, and so it would be the only place for a LJ acquaintance to have any contact with me at all.
Good idea, though.
Okay, now I'm really curious. Who linked you to it? I'm not seeing any friends-in-common on our lists....
I was linked by htnatch, who I don't believe has me as a friend, although I have her as one. I've known her through Harper's Tale since she first started playing there I think, or perhaps just slightly after. Don't you also play there?
I don't, despite being a second-generation McCaffrey fan - but that was the key. htnatch has lisawolf f'listed, who I know through my girlfriend jilesa.
Well there's our connection, then. Like playing Seven Degrees of Separation. I got into the McCaffreys through my brother, though I learned later that my father had enjoyed her works when he was in college. My best friend has Todd over for DDR when he has a layover in Atlanta. I kick her every time because she never invites me over. She knows him through D*C.
came her from a link on lisawolf's profile...
does the Abuse team actually know who has this and who doesn't?
I don't know whether or not they keep an active list. Seeing as part of the idea is to link to (or otherwise reference) it on your profile page, it seems to me that difference in how long it would take to check a user's profile vs. searching for the info in a database somewhere is negligible. | |
